New for 2008 -Super Thursdays!

Our Super Thursdays Extended Limited Capacity trips this year have been great. This is what others may call a Marathon, but this is much more. With 40% fewer anglers than our All Day trip, you are guaranteed more elbow room! You will probably get 50% more fishing time than the All Day trip too! It all adds up to a great day at sea!

And don't forget our popular Tuesday Limited Capacity. We started this in 2007 and has been a great hit ever since. For those who want extra elbow room, but can't devote the extra time of the extended length trips, this is perfect!

October 18, 2008 - Fishing Report

We have been having unbelievable fishing. Fall fishing at its best. Good sized Cod and Pollock and numerous Haddock. Our Fall Overnight Fishing trip came back yesterday with loaded coolers of Haddock, many of our customers caught 20 Haddock or so each. These trips have been going beyond the reach of our day trips, and have been a huge success. The great weather, active fishing, good camaraderie, all combines for a great day at sea.

We are going everyday 7 am to 4 pm thru end of October. Starting in November, we will be going 7 am to 4 pm Thursdays to Sunday.

Jen Phelan's Prize Cod on Half Day Fishing trip
Whale cod caught on Half Day Trip June 29, 2008!

Whale cod caught on Half Day Trip!
64 1/4 pounds of mammoth Cod! Jen Phelan from Ayer MA, hauled in this great prize on our Half Day Fishing trip! We have had some great fishing this season, and luckily, have not had to travel to the end of the world to get to where we can catch fish. This has been great news for our half day fishing trips. We have had some great trips this year. Mostly, we have been catching Haddock, but on Sunday, Cod fishing was the prize!

These Half day Fishing trips are great for those that may want to take their family fishing, but a full day may be much for the younger ones. These are great fun, especially when there is hope to catch some fish. If you have thought of taking the family fishing, this is a great time!

Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins on Aug 30th, Jodi Sivak 2008
Whale Sightings Report - September 7, 2008

The past couple weeks have been interesting. We've had ups and downs with the weather, and ups and downs with the sightings as well. Our days continued to be incredible for the beginning of this reporting period, as you'll see in the daily detail below. But then the patterns started changing, seemingly overnight. Oftentimes, a major weather system will shift the ocean currents, which shifts the nutrients and bait fish in the water. That, in turn, shifts the whales because the whales will go where the food is. Typically, this is a gradual thing occurring over a couple days or so, other times it is like someone flipping a switch. I wish I could dive on the Bank when this happens, or that we could record various conditions throughout the water column on a daily basis. I'd love to know the changes and the exact conditions that trigger distribution shifts of large whales throughout the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

After a few days of the slow-down, things got back to normal with blows in every direction and a lot of fantastic Humpback sightings! Just when it was getting exciting, Tropical Storm Hanna arrived and created high winds and high seas. Safety is paramount at Yankee Fleet and we decided it best to stay in the past few days, also fending off queasiness for our passengers! Now I'm itching to get back out there on Stellwagen Bank and see what affect this recent weather system has had on the bait fish and the whales.

The bird sightings over the past couple weeks have been up and down as well, further indicating that the bait fish were shifting with changing ocean currents. On the best days, we're still seeing the usual suspects including Juvenile Northern Gannets, Greater Shearwaters, a few Sooty Shearwaters here and there, Common Terns, Wilson's Storm Petrels, and both the Herring and Black-Backed Gulls.

I have a lot of days to tell you about so I'm going to get right to it ....
