Whale cod caught on Half Day Trip June 29, 2008!
Whale cod caught on Half Day Trip! 64 1/4 pounds of mammoth Cod! Jen Phelan from Ayer MA, hauled in this great prize on our Half Day Fishing trip! We have had some great fishing this season, and luckily, have not had to travel to the end of the world to get to where we can catch fish. This has been great news for our half day fishing trips. We have had some great trips this year. Mostly, we have been catching Haddock, but on Sunday, Cod fishing was the prize! These Half day Fishing trips are great for those that may want to take their family fishing, but a full day may be much for the younger ones. These are great fun, especially when there is hope to catch some fish. If you have thought of taking the family fishing, this is a great time! |

Friday, July 18, 2008 - Fishing Report
Consistent and steady is the word of the day this past week. Everybody seems to be going home with some Haddock with a few Cod thrown in for good measure. The Half Day Fishing has been doing well also, with Haddock and Redfish going home in many coolers. A perfect way to beat the heat and have some fun catching some fish. Our All Day Fishing trips are running everyday 7-4 and weekends 6-3 & 7-4. Limited Tuesdays trips have 40% fewer people. Our new Super Thursdays have limited capacity and add 3 hours for an exciting day! Half Day trips leave the dock every morning at 8:00 am. We are now taking reservations for our Fall Overnight Trips - these are great opportunities to fill the cooler! Reservations are suggested so give us a call at 1-800-942-5464. Whale Sightings Report - July 13, 2008
Wow! It's been another great week of humpback sightings. Overall, we spent time with Echo and calf, Cajun and calf, Cardhu and calf, Firefly and calf, Glo-stick, Conflux, Milkweed, Etch-A-Sketch, Pinpoint, Pele, Pepper, Nile, Alphorn, Geometry, and Fulcrum. A full week indeed! We started out with a fun display of surface-active behavior from Glo-stick and Conflux, that included lots of tail-slapping, flipper-slapping, and breaching. It was really quite funny to see these behaviors repeated over and over again in what looked like synchronized swimming at times. I don't think they even noticed us, they were so intent on what they were doing. We were also treated to the first (small) flock of common terns that day, in addition to the typical seabird suspects including greater and sooty shearwaters, black-backed and herring gulls, juvenile Northern gannets, and Wilsons storm petrels. As always, minkes were plentiful and popping up all around the boat throughout the week, especially during active humpback feeding. We had a variety of fin whales too, including a mom/calf pair that popped up right beside us on our way back to port on Thursday. It was phenomenal and they were perfectly synchronized in surfacing and diving. NOAA (the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) was back out this week too, continuing their yearly tagging and research projects (see the July 6, 2008 sightings report for more information). Etch-A-Sketch came right up to the boat in wide, open-mouth feeding on Thursday, with NOAA following closely behind. As Etch-A-Sketch surfaced once, very close to us, I noticed a tag on its back. This picture shows the tag attached on the right dorsal side of Etch-A-Sketch between the blowholes and dorsal fin. Our passengers that day were very interested in learning more about the tagging process and the information that is gathered following retrieval of the tag. It was a fascinating day and I was happy to see that Etch-A-Sketch was completely oblivious to the tag and fully engaged in active feeding. Come out and join us soon. The season continues to amaze me and every single day is a new adventure! Whale Watching is sailing everyday. Trip times are Monday-Friday 1:30-5:30 and Saturday and Sunday 2:30-6:30. Reservations are suggested so give us a call at 1-800-942-5464 or click below for online tickets. We'd love to take you out to see the magnificent sea life in our waters! Its a whale world, Jodi Sivak Lead Naturalist |
